How does the Ember Noise mixer work?
Four sounds sit at the corners of a matrix. One draggable point, the ember, blends them continuously by position using bilinear corner weighting. Every sound also has a parametric EQ for shaping its place in the mix.
Which sounds are included?
Twenty-four built-ins: White, Pink, and Brown Noise; airplane and car interiors; two bedroom fans; city park and coffee shop; crickets, fire, forest rain, two ocean sounds, rain on a tent, two rivers, soft rain, spring peepers, thunder, two trains, wind, and Rings of Neptune, an ambient reworking of Gustav Holst’s Neptune, the Mystic. You can search and favorite them, add your own tags, and import audio of your own.
Does Ember Noise work offline?
Yes. Every built-in sound ships inside the app, and playback works in airplane mode. Send to Device uses the local network only when you choose to move a preset to another device.
Do I need an account?
You can use Ember Noise without an account or sign-in. Presets live on your device, and Send to Device moves them directly between your devices without cloud sync.
What data does Ember Noise collect?
The app records zero analytics or tracking data and operates without an application backend. If you report a problem, Ember Noise prepares the diagnostic report on your device so you can review it before choosing how to send or copy it.
Is Ember Noise a tinnitus treatment?
Ember Noise is a general-purpose ambient sound mixer rather than a medical device or tinnitus treatment. Some people use low-level background sound to make tinnitus less noticeable, but experiences vary.
Can I use my own sounds?
Yes. Import from Files accepts audio that Apple’s media frameworks can decode, up to 12 hours long. Ember Noise makes a normalized 48 kHz playback copy, streams long recordings, and gives imports a loop editor with in/out points, click reduction, a seam crossfade, and seam preview. Imported sounds travel with presets sent to your other devices.
What is an .ember package? Can its sounds be extracted?
An .ember package is a portable Ember Noise file. It can contain sounds, presets, or both. A preset-only package can reference sounds already built into Ember Noise, while a sound-only package acts as a sound pack. Ember Noise verifies the package before importing anything, but the file is not encrypted or DRM-protected. It is a purpose-built container rather than a ZIP, so ordinary unzip tools will not open it; a technically inclined user can still extract any included audio. Only include audio you have permission to distribute.
How does Send to Device work? Is it safe?
Send to Device pairs two of your devices, then transfers a preset directly over your local network with end-to-end encryption (authenticated HPKE). Device identities are held in the Keychain. The package stays between the paired devices, and the sender reports success after the receiver verifies and saves it.
Can I make it stop playing after I fall asleep?
Yes. Long-press Play on iPhone or iPad, or right-click it on Mac, then choose 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes or enter a custom duration. You can save and pin favorite lengths. A ring shows the countdown and playback fades during the final 10 seconds.
Does it keep playing in the background or with the screen locked?
Yes on the Apple apps. iPhone and iPad support background playback plus lock-screen and Control Center controls. On Mac, closing the mixer keeps audio running from the menu bar, with media keys and Now Playing integration.
What platforms does Ember Noise run on?
Native iPhone and iPad apps require iOS or iPadOS 26 or later; the native Mac app requires macOS 26 or later. Those Apple apps are in release testing. A Linux version is in active development and is not a public distribution yet. There is no public download or store listing yet.
Is Ember Noise free? Does it have ads?
Ember Noise is free, ad-free, subscription-free, and account-free. Public downloads are not available yet. When the app is released, this site will link only to verified download pages.
