FAQ
Questions, answered plainly
What makes Ember Noise different from other white-noise apps?
Most noise apps are grids of on/off loops. Ember Noise is a mixer: four sounds sit at the corners of a matrix and one draggable point — the ember — blends them continuously by position, using bilinear corner weighting. Add a real parametric EQ on every sound, and you shape noise instead of just switching it on.
Which sounds are included?
Ten built-ins: White Noise, Pink Noise, and Brown Noise are generated from scratch so they loop perfectly, plus seven voiced ambient loops — Rain, Train, Crickets, Ocean, Wind, Fire, and Rings of Neptune. You can also import any Apple-decodable audio file of your own.
Does Ember Noise work offline?
Completely. Every sound ships inside the app and playback never touches the network, so it works in airplane mode. The only optional network feature is Send to Device, which uses your local network — not the internet — to move presets between your own devices.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no account, no sign-in, and no cloud sync. Your presets live on your device, and moving them between devices happens directly, device to device.
What data does Ember Noise collect?
None. The app has no analytics, no tracking, and no server to send anything to. If you choose to report a problem, a diagnostic report is composed on your device and you see what it contains before anything is sent.
Can I use my own sounds?
Yes. Import from Files accepts any Apple-decodable audio. Long recordings are streamed rather than loaded whole, and imported sounds get loop shaping with a seam preview so they repeat cleanly. Imported sounds travel with presets you send to your other devices.
How does Send to Device work? Is it safe?
Send to Device pairs two of your devices, then transfers a preset directly over your local network with end-to-end encryption (authenticated HPKE). Device identities are held in the Keychain, nothing is uploaded to any server, and the sender reports success only after the receiver has verified and saved the package.
Will it stop playing after I fall asleep?
Yes — set a stop timer and playback winds down when it expires. Durations you use often can be saved as one-tap timer presets, independent of your sound presets.
Does it keep playing in the background or with the screen locked?
Yes. Ember Noise plays like a proper audio app: background playback, lock-screen and Control Center controls, and Now Playing metadata on every platform. On the Mac, closing the mixer window keeps the audio running from the menu bar.
What platforms does Ember Noise run on?
iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS 26 or later) and Mac (macOS 26 or later, fully native — no Catalyst or Electron). A native Linux port is in development. The app is launching on the App Store; this site will link to it the moment it is live.
